As President of John Child & Company, Karen is responsible for developing and managing the Company’s professional practice that includes real estate appraisal and consulting and business valuation. She specializes in complex real estate and business valuation assignments.

Karen originally joined the Company in 1973 and has more than 40 years of professional experience. She has served in elected and appointed national and international leadership positions in the Counselors of Real Estate and the Appraisal Institute. In 2010 she received the prestigious James Felt Creative Counseling Award from The Counselors of Real Estate.

Paul joined John Child & Company in 1972. With this perspective, Paul understands the cyclical nature of Hawaii’s real estate markets. Paul has extensive knowledge of the valuation of partial takings, conservation easements and other atypical ownership interests. He is also active in lease rent renegotiations, having participated as an arbitrator and serving as a testifying valuation expert.

Paul serves in leadership positions in the Hawaii Chapters of Appraisal Institute, Counselors of Real Estate, and NAIOP Hawaii.

Shelly estimates the value of closely-held businesses and real estate in Hawaii. Because of her expertise in both real property and business valuation, she is able to effectively assist clients with their estate planning and gifting decisions, tax reporting, acquisitions and mergers, stock transfers and redemptions, and internal accounting.

Shelly's real estate valuations have included a variety of industrial, commercial, agricultural and resort properties, conservation easements, partial takings, and complex or limited-market properties such as hospitals, assisted living facilities, and churches. She provides real estate consulting and market assessments for a diverse client base that have included developers, schools and other nonprofit organizations, attorneys, and private trusts. Shelly has also provided expert testimony and has served as a party-appointed and third-party arbitrator in various proceedings.

Shelly is an active member of the Appraisal Institute and currently serves as a Region VII Director to the national Board of Directors. She is also a Board of Director and current Vice Chair for the Appraisal Institute’s Education and Relief Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed to foster the advancement of the real estate appraisal profession.
